150 | 🤖 🧨 Elon's AI Tool is Here

Brainyacts #150

It’s Friday. I just prepped with in-house counsel from Meta and Google for a panel next week on GenAI for corporate legal teams. We had a great chat about all things Generative AI and actually got prep done too.

It is great to connect with people all over the world to discuss this topic. And so I want to thank each of you for reading this newsletter and for connecting with me. How cool is it that I get to write to over 3400 of you twice a week on something we all care about and are learning together?

Let’s dive in!

In today’s Brainyacts:

  1. Your AI New Year Resolution

  2. My first 20 minutes with Elon’s Grok AI

  3. Google Gemini and more AI model news

  4. Arbitration via AI and other related content

Lead Memo

🥳 🍾 Start Writing Your AI New Year’s Resolution

As we near the end of the year, why not start thinking about what you resolve to do(or not do) in terms of using generative AI in 2024?

To get you started, here is a short list:

  1. Commit to Citing Real Cases, Not AI-Made Ones: I promise to double-check that the cases my AI drafts up actually exist and are not from the 'Court of Imaginary Appeals'.

  2. Stop Blaming the AI for Missed Deadlines: I will bravely accept that hitting the 'generate brief' button at 11:55 PM might not be the AI's fault.

  3. Learn the Difference Between AI and A.I. (Actual Intelligence): I will remember that AI doesn't stand for 'Absolutely Infallible' and sometimes old-fashioned brainpower is needed.

  4. Refrain from Asking AI for Ethical Advice: I recognize that asking an AI whether it's ethical to use AI in legal practice might be a bit circular.

  5. Avoid Using AI as a Scapegoat in Court: I promise not to claim "the AI made me do it" when questioned about unusual legal strategies.

  6. Remember That AI Can't Replace Human Empathy: While AI can help with legal research, it can't understand a client's emotions or replace the human touch in sensitive situations.

🤖 🧨 Grok AI has dropped. (in US only right now)

Elon Musk’s (re)entrance into the public generative AI model arms race happened early this morning. The much anticipated Grok AI (access via X (fka Twitter), has been released to all Premium + subscribers. Premium + costs $16/month in the US and gives you access to Grok among other benefits.

Best way to describe Grok?

Grok is a humorous AI built by xAI, inspired by the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and JARVIS from Iron Man. This AI is designed to be witty, rebellious, and helpful, with a unique perspective on humanity.

Why did Elon build Grok?

Elon Musk, the man behind xAI (and OpenAI which he co-founded), wanted to create an AI that could answer almost anything with a touch of humor and a hint of rebellion. Grok is not afraid to tackle those spicy questions that other AI systems shy away from. Plus, Grok has a real-time connection to the world through X posts (formerly known as tweets) on the X platform, making it a valuable source of information.

What makes Grok different from other generative AI models? Grok's humor sets it apart from other AI systems. It's like having a virtual sidekick that can make you laugh while helping you navigate the world. Additionally, Grok's real-time knowledge of the world gives it an edge over other AI systems that may not have access to the latest information.

What does the future hold for Grok? As Grok evolves, it will likely be smarter and more capable. Elon’s grasp of AI in general is severe given the massive investment in AI at Tesla, as well as in X and Grok. He has a grudge against Larry Page of Google who called Elon a specist - intending it to be an insult. Elon is human-first and recognizes the need to develop AI in a manner that is only helpful to humanity, and not a threat.

I spent my first 20 minutes with Grok earlier today and captured it for you. I tested out its basic functions. I try to have it analyze and negotiate an MSA, write a Grok Use Policy, and a host of other tasks.
