Lead Memo
♟️🧠 Strategy of elite firm does not involve AI
I spent the last two days gearing up the management committee to begin a strategy design journey. I will be will them for over a year operating as an embedded fractional advisor and facilitator - which means I help them think of the right questions and roll up my sleeves to help them get answers. We covered a lot of ground during these pre-kick-off days as we looked to establish a common understanding, shared language, and our micro-culture within this small group of leaders.
And we did not talk AI at all. Only one person uttered it. Not me. 😉
I share this only to say that sometimes, there is core blocking and tackling to do as well as serious business model design that leads to elite performance.
Will we get to AI? Likely, at some point.
But elite legal firms understand that success isn’t built solely on the back of technology. It’s constructed on a bedrock of shared understanding, clear communication, and intrinsic business value. Before jumping onto the AI bandwagon, these firms are ensuring that their foundational strategies are robust and resilient.
As should anyone.

Here is a nice summary.
And here is a referral code to get 2 weeks of OpenAI’s Plus subscription for free. First come, first served.
If you are using the free ChatGPT-3.5, you are probably not getting a good sense of what AI can do, not only is GPT-4 much, much smarter, but it also has extra capabilities.
But they are all confusingly labelled and separate modes. Here is my attempt to annotate (& include Bing)
