🧠🚀 Notable AI Figures: Stephen Wolfram
Stephen Wolfram is an influential and creative figure in the world of science, technology, and artificial intelligence. Born in London in 1959, he started out as a boy genius, earning his PhD in theoretical physics from Caltech at the age of 20. He then took the academic world by storm with his work in complex systems and cellular automata, a model of computation that has had significant influence on the field of artificial intelligence.
However, Stephen's true claim to fame lies in his entrepreneurial ventures. He founded Wolfram Research, the company behind Mathematica, a leading software in technical computing and data science. Mathematica is used worldwide by scientists, engineers, and researchers for everything from designing spacecrafts to understanding the human genome.
Wolfram then used his mathematical prowess to create a search engine like no other, Wolfram|Alpha. Wolfram|Alpha is a "computational knowledge engine", using sophisticated AI algorithms to understand and answer factual queries directly, instead of merely searching the web.
🚨 BTW OpenAI’s GPT-4 has a plugin for Wolfram|Alpha. This plugin gives GPT-4 actual computational (e.g. math) skills.
As for why he's vital in the field of generative AI?
Wolfram has been a proponent of algorithmic and computational universe theories. He suggests that the universe itself might be fundamentally composed of simple rules, much like cellular automata (which is way to complex to explain here - I even asked GPT-4 for help and it still was too much for this). Just know that this line of thought has substantial implications for AI, suggesting that even complex outcomes could be the result of simple, algorithmic processes.
In a nutshell, Stephen Wolfram is a powerhouse who has blurred the lines between science, computation, and entrepreneurship. His ideas have profoundly shaped our understanding of how the world—and the universe—works, and have paved the way for significant advancements in AI. He's not just someone who's made a mark on the field of AI, he's someone who's helped define it.
🎁 AND BONUS!!
A kind Twitter friend reminded me of a paper that Wolfram wrote back in February that does an astonishing job of explaining what is going on with ChatGPT in a very easy to understand but intensely detailed way. It is long but just spend 10 minutes with it and I promise your understanding of generative AI will sky rocket! 🚀 Thank you Ben Wightwick.
🤳📸Have fun with generative history via selfies
Ok, let’s just find happiness in these and think about how cool this is in terms of ‘capturing/creating’ unique moments with historical figures.
News you can Use:
United Arab Emirates’ AI model takes top spot
Falcon 40B, the UAE’s first large-scale open-source, 40-billion-parameter AI model launched by Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute (TII) last week, soared to the top spot on Hugging Face’s latest Open Large Language Model (LLM) Leaderboard.
This means that Falcon 40B has outperformed other established models such as LLaMA from Meta, StableLM from Stability AI, and RedPajama from Together in four key benchmarks that measure the model’s (1) reasoning, (2) inference, (3) multitask accuracy and (4) truthfulness.
This impacts a recreational pragmatic user of generative AI because Falcon 40B is available open source for research and commercial use, which means that anyone can access the model’s weights and use them for various applications such as chatbots, engineering, healthcare, sustainability and coding.
Autonomous jet fighters?!
US Military Is Testing An Autonomous Fighter Jet, Are Robot Soldiers Next?
So, could Terminator-like robots take the front seat in wars in the future?
Don’t get scammed!
You don’t have to be a Trump supporter to get scammed. Sharing this so you see how easy it can happen.
