Future Media: Where is Brainyacts Going?

Issue #59. Whoa!

As I write this edition I thought I would share part of the inspiration for this newsletter. It comes from a guy named Shaan Puri. He created a wildly popular crypto newsletter called The Milk Road. He recently sold it for a lot of money. That is not what inspired me though (but that would be cool). It was the business model and the style of the newsletter. He modeled his newsletter on The Morning Brew and The Hustle.

Anyway, it got me thinking about the future of The Brainyacts and new media in general. So here are some thoughts for those of you that might not be up to speed on where or what new media is and the challenges all media face.

When Personality and Profit Collide: The Morning Brew and The Hustle Show Us the Way

In a world where the media landscape looks like a scene straight out of Mad Max, with digital media giants BuzzFeed and Vice desperately grasping for survival, there are two shining examples of how to do things right: The Morning Brew and The Hustle. These two newsletters have found the sweet spot where personality, relevance, and profitability come together in a harmonious dance, leaving often soulless AI-generated content in the dust.

While the BuzzFeeds and Vices of the digital realm have gone all-in on the "Replace Humans with Bots" strategy, The Morning Brew and The Hustle remind us that it's the human touch that keeps readers coming back for more. They've got the perfect blend of humor, insight, and brevity that keeps subscribers clicking, sharing, and yes, even paying.

Let's break it down. What makes these newsletters stand out from the AI-generated content that many media outlets make about as exciting as watching paint dry? It's simple: they're authentic, engaging, and packed with value. The Morning Brew and The Hustle deliver essential news, sprinkled with wit and flair, straight to your inbox. They're like your daily espresso shot of knowledge, minus the pretentious barista. I try to be this for you.

But it's not just their content that sets them apart; it's their business model too. While BuzzFeed and Vice are on a never-ending quest for ad revenue, The Morning Brew and The Hustle have opted for a different approach. They've built trust with their readers and turned it into a sustainable business through sponsored content, partnerships, and even premium subscription plans. Talk about a masterclass in monetization.

I have toyed with ads but to be honest it is a lot of work for many reasons I will not bore you with now. Also, I would not want to do it in a way that diminishes your reading experience.

In the end, the rise of The Morning Brew and The Hustle offers a glimmer of hope for those of us still dedicated to the human touch in our content. Yes, I am an advocate for generative AI, but hopefully you know me well enough now to know I don’t think it is a replacement for humans- it is a tool for humans.

Do I think I can get Brainyacts to the Morning Brew level? Nope.

But I am thinking and planning now what day 101 will be like. After writing consecutively for 100 days will I still want to write? Will I want to take a break? Will you still want to read it? Will others continue to find it and subscribe?

One thing is for sure, I don’t want to lose you all.

USE CASE Mobile Access to ChatGPT

A Step-by-Step Guide

A couple of readers have reached out to ask this, so I figured I would share it here.

As mobile devices have become an integral part of our lives, it's natural to want access to tools like ChatGPT on the go. To help you safely and reliably use ChatGPT on your phone, I've compiled a step-by-step guide for two methods: Bing Chat and OpenAI's mobile version of ChatGPT.

Bing Chat

Bing has integrated GPT-4 directly into its mobile app, making it an easy and convenient option.

  1. Download the Bing mobile app from the App Store or Google Play Store.

  2. Open the app to view the home screen.

  3. Press the center Bing icon on the lower tool panel to access the Chat function.

  • For a more powerful version of GPT-4, use the Creative Mode on Bing.

OpenAI's Mobile Version of ChatGPT

While OpenAI doesn't have an official app, you can access ChatGPT through any mobile browser.

🚨⚠️Do not be fooled by apps that look like an official app!
See how some apps mimic the color, style, and imagery of OpenAI!

Steps to use ChatGPT on your moble:

  1. Open a browser on your phone and visit chat.openai.com. You may need to log in.

  2. To create a home screen icon for easy access, follow these steps for iPhone users:

  3. In Safari, locate the Share menu at the bottom of the screen.

  1. Swipe through the list and tap "Add to Home Screen."

  1. A menu titled "Add to Home Screen" will appear, allowing you to name your new web icon (e.g., "ChatGPT").

  2. Tap "Add" in the top-right corner of the box.

Now, an icon for ChatGPT will appear on your Home Screen. Tap the shortcut anytime to use ChatGPT, and Safari will automatically open and load the website.

Tool you can Use: AudioPen

What is it: A tool to turn your voice ramblings into nice summaries

What does it do: Think of this as an elegant and easy way to capture your unstructured ideas, thoughts, and content by just speaking out loud. For me this replaces using voice memos or opening Gmail and using the audio option for typing (too many mistakes).

My take: You definitely need to try this! It worked and it was easy. Now I only had 3 minutes in the free version so I would love to see if I used it on a 45 minute walk where I am riffing to myself. But this seems like high utility.

I could also see how having this on during a call would be useful as a way to summarize the call. I am not sure how well it would do with multiple voices/speakers but it might be worth a try.

This approach will ensure clients benefit from the transformative potential of generative AI while maintaining data protection standards.

Apple’s AI

On May 4, during Apple's second-quarter earnings call, CEO Tim Cook refrained from discussing AI in his opening remarks, unlike his counterparts from other tech giants. When asked about generative AI by an analyst, Cook maintained Apple's long-standing policy of secrecy regarding future products and declined to provide any specifics.

Despite the lack of explicit information, Cook indicated that Apple is carefully considering the role of AI in its products and services. He highlighted the importance of being deliberate and thoughtful when incorporating AI, acknowledging the various issues surrounding AI, such as bias, explainability, safety, and societal risks. These concerns are being widely discussed in the industry and addressed by government initiatives.
